Winix 5500-2 review: strong buy

We’d buy the Winix 5500-2 if you need odor control — a bedroom near a kitchen, a pet room — and you can still find one at a sensible price. We’d skip it if you have a small bedroom without an odor problem; the Levoit will do the same particle work for less money. It is discontinued, so remaining stock and filter supply are now part of the decision, not a footnote.

The filtration is a genuine four-stage system, and the carbon stage is the interesting part. Rather than the thin carbon-impregnated fabric most purifiers in this price bracket use, the 5500-2 uses a pelletized activated carbon filter — considerably more carbon by weight, which makes a real difference for cooking smells, smoke, and pet odor. This is the single best reason to want one, and it is a feature that mostly disappears at this price now that the model is gone.

The PlasmaWave question

PlasmaWave is Winix’s ionization stage. As with most ionizers, the honest advice is to leave it off — it adds little that the HEPA and carbon stages are not already doing, and switching it off sidesteps the ozone discussion entirely. It has its own button and the unit works completely normally with it disabled.

Filters and running costs

Genuine replacement sets run about $50; third-party equivalents are considerably cheaper, and annual filter cost lands somewhere around $40 depending on which route you take and how often you vacuum the pre-filter.

Winix’s commitment to supply filters through 2032 is the reassurance that makes buying a discontinued unit reasonable rather than reckless. A purifier you cannot get filters for is a paperweight, and that risk is genuinely covered here.

Someone who finds remaining stock at a genuine discount and specifically wants the pelletized carbon for odor control. If you cook a lot, have pets, or deal with smoke, that filter is a real advantage over the thin carbon layers in most competitors.

Who should skip it

Most people, now, simply on availability. If you are buying an air purifier today and remaining 5500-2 stock is priced at or above the Coway AP-1512HH, buy the Coway — it is current, comparable on air delivery, and carries a three-year warranty on a product still in production. Also skip it if you see a listing well above the old street price; discontinued models attract opportunistic pricing.

Final verdict

A good purifier in an awkward position. Worth buying at a genuine discount, especially for odor control, and safe enough to own given the filter commitment through 2032. But it is no longer the recommendation to give someone who just wants to buy an air purifier and stop thinking about it.
